India reports 1.52L new Covid cases,839 deaths in last 24-hours; biggest-ever 1 day spike

India reported 1,52,879 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, setting another grim one-day record as the overall tally reached 1,33,58,805, according to data released by the Union Health Ministry on Sunday. With 11,08,087 active cases, India is now the fourth worst coronavirus affected nations across the world. As many as 839 deaths were reported taking the total Covid related deaths so far in the country to 1,69,275, which is the highest since October 18, 2020, the data updated at 8 am showed.

A total of 90,584 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries to 1,20,81,443 with a recovery rate of 90.44 per cent.

The Health Ministry said that a total of 1,20,81,443 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. So far, 25,66,26,850 samples have been tested.

States such as Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan have shown a steep rise in new Covid-19 cases.

Maharashtra continued to remain the severely affected state in the country with 55,411 new COVID-19 cases taking the case count to 33,43,951.

Registering a constant rise for the 32nd day in a row, the active cases increased to 11,08,087 comprising 8.29 per cent of the total infections, while the recovery rate further dropped to 90.44 per cent, the ministry said.

The increase in cases has prompted several states to impose night curfew and strict restriction, while Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has hinted towards a lockdown. 

Meanwhile, the Delhi government on Saturday announced a new restriction, banning most public gatherings and setting limits for attendance at restaurants, theatres, on public transport and functions like weddings and funerals. Whereas hospitals in Pune and Madhya Pradesh are witnessing a shortage of beds and ventilators.

A 'Tika Utsav' or vaccine festival will be observed from today to inoculate the maximum number of eligible people against the coronavirus.

Worldwide, over 13 crore cases have been recorded so far; 29.15 lakh people have died.
