Announcing an end to their over-a-year-long
agitation, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) decided to call off their protest at
New Delhi’s borders on Thursday. Farmers will start leaving for their
homes and will vacate from the protesting sites from Saturday onwards.
They occupied Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri
border for their protest against the three farm laws. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha
(SKM), the umbrella body of farmers' unions spearheading the protests, stated
that their 15-month agitation will be called off on Saturday.
Last month, on the occasion of Gurupurab,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that all three farm laws will be
scrapped. Farmers rejoiced after listening to this news but still demanded a
law for MSP. The government assured that a decision will be taken in their favour.
As farmers demands are met, they have decided
to end their 15-months long protest. “For one year we have been at war,” shares
Sarabjeet Kaur. “We have suffered, people have died. But today farmers won the
war.”
Farmers finally felt some kind of relief after
a year-long protest. Harmeet Singh, a resident of Punjab’s Village said, “Now, I
can go back to my home and live a stress-free life again. Now, no one will take
away my rights and I can continue to lead a normal life like I was living
before this agitation.”
Farmers were seen in a joyous mood as they
were happy to return back to their homes. They celebrated by circulating sweets
and offering prayers to the almighty.
SKM said on December 11, a ‘Vijay Diwas’
(victory day) will be celebrated at all borders, toll plazas, and protest
places across the country, following which the protesters will return.
Protesting farmers at Singhu border had
started to pack up their trolleys in the morning, as the outcome of the meeting
was expected. They knew that they will win this war.
