A shooting in the city of Edmonton, Canada killed 20-year-old Indian student Harshdeep Singh, leaving his family and community back home in Punjab in deep mourning.
Harshdeep was a young student who had Migrated to Canada in search of a better future, something that young Indians dream about. Like many other international students works very hard in balancing his studies and his part-time job. Harshdeep used to work as a security guard to earn his livelihood. He was shot dead in a violent scuffle inside an apparent building on December 6.
Clash that turns into deadly end
It so happened that a group of people started a clash outside an apartment where Harshdeep was on his duty as the security guard. This dispute became serious, few members of the group entered into the apparent and started violent fights. Harshdeep was thrown down the stairs and later shot from behind.
The ghastly incident was captured on the CCTV camera, which captured the assaulting throwing Harshdeep down the stairs and firing shots at him as he lay on the floor. The moments of confusion and shouting are visible in the footage.
Suspected was arrested and charged
Canadian authorities moved quickly to take the accused in custody, where two accused were identified as Ivan Ren and Judith Salto. The suspects have been charged with first-degree murder. According to police, Harshdeep was found unconscious at the scene following reports of gunfire at 12:30 PM, in the area of 106 Street and 107 Avenue. Harshdeep was immediately rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, he was declared dead on his arrival in the hospital.
The intention behind the attack is unclear but investigators piece together the sequence of events using CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Indian community in Canada and back home. Friends, colleagues, and community members have expressed their grief and outrage over the loss of a young life. Many have also called a stricter safety measures for international students working in vulnerable roles.
