In a significant shift towards hybrid work arrangements, Infosys, India’s second-largest IT services company, has mandated that employees work from the office at least 10 days a month. The new policy will take effect from March 10, 2025, with a system intervention in place to ensure compliance.
New policy details
According to an internal email sent to employees, Infosys has introduced a systematic attendance monitoring mechanism that will restrict the number of work-from-home (WFH) days available per month.
For managers at JL6 and above, including senior managers, delivery managers, and senior delivery managers, work-from-office expectations will be based on business requirements. However vice presidents and higher executives are not included in this mandate.
Enforcing the work-from-office rule
To ensure compliance, Infosys has made modifications to its internal attendance tracking system. Employees use a mobile application to log their attendance, but WFH requests will no longer be auto-approved. Employees must manually punch in at the office for at least 10 days each month.
Failure to meet the required work-from-office quota could result in deductions from an employee’s leave balance, sources indicate.
Why Infosys is making this move
This move aligns with a broader industry trend where companies are balancing remote flexibility with in-office collaboration. A senior Infosys executive states that the decision aims to promote teamwork productivity, and employee engagement, while still offering flexibility within a structured framework.
While Infosys has not publicly responded to media inquiries regarding the mandate, the policy signals a shift in the IT sector, where many firms have been gradually encouraging employees to return to offices.
With over 323,000 employees, Infosys is among the key players shaping the future of hybrid work in India’s IT industry. This decision could set a precedent for other tech firms looking to reintroduce office work while maintaining some level of remote flexibility.
