As per latest orders released by Punjab Government, Amritsar Police Commissioner Arun Pal Singh has been transferred and in his place IPS Jaskaran Singh will now take over the hold. From the time IPS Arun Pal Singh was made CP Amritsar he has been in controversy and past few incidents that happened in city made him come back to spotlight.
AAP MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap also showed his disagreement with selection of Arun Pal Singh as CP Amritsar. According to him, he was not the appropriate person to take hold of city law and order. In past many incidents like killing of Sudhir Suri, drug menace and firing at NRI’s wedding have raised questions about his working.
Drugs Menace
Every other day videos of youth being intoxicated or under the influence of drugs keep coming from Amritsar which shows how easily drugs and intoxicants are present in city. Despite various search operations conducted by Amritsar Police, problem of drug addiction does not seem to stop.
Sudhir Suri Murder
This was a shocking incident that really pointed fingers at working od police as a Shiv Sena leader was murdered by unidentified youth amidst tight security. AAP MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh pointed out that the system of law and order has collapsed. He further added that Amritsar Police cannot handle the city situation due to which the crime rate has gone up.
Firing at NRI’s wedding
During this incident liquor contractors and vendors opened fire during a wedding reception that was taking place at a resort in Amritsar. Reportedly, large number of NRIs had gathered for a marriage at the resort and incident left the participants in panic. The victim of this incident showed displeasure over working of the police. Soon after this, Leader of the Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa on Tuesday demanded suspension of Amritsar Police commissioner Arun Pal Singh. He said that CP should be suspended for his inability to control the deteriorating law and order situation in the holy city.
All these incidents painted a picture of Amritsar’s deteriorating law and order after which there was a lot of pressure on government to transfer of CP Amritsar Arun Pal Singh.
