Its just been about seven months since Apple released iPhone 15 and 15 Pro, but that has not affected the hype for their next flagship models. The iPhone 16 and 16 Pro, are most likely to be unveiled in September this year, as is tradition with Apple. More information is surely to be released on Apple’s upcoming WWDC event on June 10, where it will announce its latest software, including iOS 18. It is also fairly certain that the iOS update will feature AI integration as well. In anticipation for iPhone 16 reveal, several rumors and leaks have surfaced online detailing the new specs and things to look forward to in Apple’s flagship product. Below is all you need to know about the upcoming iPhone 16 and 16 Pro.
Big design changes?
We are seeing multiple leaks online claiming that the 2024 iPhones will receive big design changes. It was just recently tipped that the iPhone 16 series will have a no-button design which was first rumoured for the iPhone 15 series, but that didn't happen because of some issues that Apple was reportedly facing. In essence, instead of the usual physical buttons seen on the sides of iPhones, Apple is said to use capacitive (touch-sensitive) buttons that respond with haptic feedback. These buttons would sense pressure and mimic the feeling of pressing a real button through vibrations created by Taptic Engine motors.
A dedicated Capture button could also be seen on the iPhone 16 series to help people quickly capture videos, as per Bloomberg. Apple is also reported to bring the new Action button to standard models of the iPhone 16 series as well, currently limited to the Pro models.
You will most likely continue to see the new punch-hole design and USB Type-C port on all the iPhone models, similar to last year's iPhone 15 series.
Larger Displays:
The upcoming iPhones are also expected to come with larger displays with even more thinner bezels around them. -The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are rumoured to launch with larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively. As per reports, the new models will feature the “Border Reduction Structure”(BRS) feature, which allows Apple to reduce the bezels on the iPhone 16 Pro models, signaling a shift towards a sleeker design. By implementing an advanced under-display system, Apple intends to significantly slim down the bezels, a change expected to transform the visual experience for users.
New flagship chip? Better thermal solution?
The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are tipped to be equipped with the A18 SoC, while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max may receive an upgraded A18 Pro chip. Under the hood, there could also be graphene pads on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max instead of graphite pads seen inside the existing models. As per leaks, Apple has taken this decision to efficiently transfer heat away from the chip, potentially reducing the handset's temperature.
Bigger battery & faster charging?
A recent leak suggests the iPhone 16 will boast a larger 3,561mAh battery, while the iPhone 16 Plus could offer a 4,006mAh unit. Details for the Pro model remain undisclosed, but the iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumoured to arrive with a bigger 4,676mAh battery.
Reports suggest that Apple could finally consider offering support for faster charging speeds, one of the major areas where Android phones have an edge over iPhones. The leaks claim the iPhone 16 models could support faster 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging, though it's uncertain if this will be realised this year.
Big camera upgrade?
The iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumoured to feature a super telephoto periscope camera with a high level of optical zoom, potentially exceeding the existing 5x range. This would be beneficial for capturing distant subjects like sports or wildlife.
Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro is said to come with a 5x optical zoom capability like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, thanks to Apple's tetraprism lens system, promising improved zoom without sacrificing image quality.
Apple is also reportedly exploring new anti-reflective optical coating technology for iPhone cameras to minimise artifacts such as lens flare and ghosting, ensuring better image quality with each shot.
The iPhone 16 Pro versions are tipped to come with an upgraded 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens for better clarity, and detail in shots because it will be able to capture more light.
