Ever since the arrival of streaming platforms, it has been seen that movies that did not perform well at the box office often garner praise on OTT platforms. Is Netflix's Gumraah a true story?
The answer is yes and no at the same time. Gumraah is a fictional story but it is inspired by multiple real cases of identical twins who got acquitted because the investigators could not identify the real culprit. Talking about Gumraah's storyline, the movie starts with Aditya Roy Kapur committing the murder of Aakash Sardana and leaving the crime spot after cleaning evidence against him. Following that police officials enter the scene. Bollywood actress Mrunal Thakur plays the character of Sub Inspector Shivani Mathur, and veteran actor Ronit Roy plays the character of ACP Dhiren Yadav. The murder case of Aakash Sardana goes to Shivani and therefore investigates it. On the other hand, ACP Yadav doubts Shivani's potential as a Police officer, however, due to Police Commissioner's recommendation ACP gives her the case.
During the course of the investigation, Shivani finds evidence against Aditya Roy Kapur. When Shivani shows the evidence to ACP Yadav, he quickly identifies him and says that his name is Arjun Sehgal. As a result, Arjun Sehgal was detained and questioned strictly by the Police. However, Arjun states that he has not committed any murder and produces a solid alibi which checks out during the investigation. In the meantime, the Police arrest (another) Aditya Roy Kapur named Ronnie (Sooraj Rana). Notably, Aditya Roy Kapur's one twin's name is Arjun, while his twin's name is Ronnie. After seeing Ronnie and Arjun's identical faces and DNAs, the Police officials go into major shock and try to find out who actually committed the murder of Aakash Sardana.

Gumraah True Story
Notably, after the movie ends, the makers produced and mentioned real cases where an actual culprit was acquitted of all charges just because they were twins. The first case was of Malaysia in 2003 in which identical twins named Satish and Sabarish were arrested on drug trafficking charges. However, Police failed to identify the actual culprit, therefore both were acquitted of all charges. Another example produced was of Germany in 2009 in which two identical twins named Hasan and Abbas were arrested on charges of a multi-million jewelry heist, however, they were acquitted because the Police could identify the real culprit. The third case is of USA. In 2011, two identical twins named Orlando and Brandon were arrested on charges of homicide shooting but they were acquitted of all charges.
