Jagir Kaur's daughter's death controversy explained
Jagir Kaur's daughter Harpreet Kaur died under suspicious circumstances in 2000. After this, Jagir Kaur was accused of kidnapping her daughter, forcing her to have an abortion and then killing her. The CBI court acquitted Jagir Kaur of the murder charges and held her guilty only of kidnapping and forcing an abortion. The CBI court sentenced her to five years imprisonment. Later, the case reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
In an appeal filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Kamaljit, who claimed to be the husband of Jagir Kaur's daughter Harpreet, demanded the dismissal of the CBI court's decision to acquit Jagir Kaur of the murder charge. Later, the CBI also filed an appeal in the High Court against the decision of the special court.
As per reports, Jagir Kaur's daughter Harpreet was pregnant at the time of her death. The case came under controversy after her last rites were performed secretly after her death. The case reached the court when the Punjab Police allegedly did not investigate the complaint of Kamaljit, who claimed to be Harpreet's husband.
On 9 June 2000, the court handed over the investigation of this case to the CBI. The CBI registered a case against Bibi Jagir Kaur on 3 October 2000 under sections 302, 304, 313, 201 and 120B of the IPC. The special CBI court in Patiala convicted Bibi Jagir Kaur on 30 March 2012 in this case for forcing Harpreet to have an abortion and keeping her hostage and sentenced her to five years of imprisonment, but did not hold her guilty of murder.
Ultimately, Jagir Kaur was acquitted in the murder case by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2018. After that, she unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket, and the next year she was chosen as the president of the SGPC.
