In a major breakthrough against illegal arms trafficking and anti-social elements, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur, has successfully apprehended a habitual criminal with four illegal pistols (32 bore) and 12 live rounds during a special operation near Workshop Chowk, Jalandhar.
Divulging the details, Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur said that the operation was conducted by the CIA team led to the arrest of notorious criminal Sukhwant Singh alias Sukha Shekho, a resident of village Dhirpur, Jalandhar.
She further revealed that acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted Sukhwant Singh while he was heading towards Burlton Park with the an intent to commit a crime. Upon search, the illegal firearms and ammunition were recovered from his possession, she said adding subsequently, FIR No. 17, dated 23.02.2025, under Sections 25(1)-B, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act, was registered at Police Station Division No. 1, Jalandhar. His arrest led to prevention of crime he was intended to commit by using firearms. The accused was presented before the court, and a remand was secured for further investigation.
The CP further informed that Sukhwant Singh has an extensive criminal history with multiple cases registered against him, including charges under the Arms Act, NDPS Act, and serious offenses like attempt to murder, murder, and criminal conspiracy at various Police stations in Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Tarantaran Districts. The Police are now investigating potential links to larger arms smuggling networks and criminal syndicates operating in the region.
Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur emphasized the police’s commitment to eradicating illegal weapons and maintaining law and order. "The Jalandhar Police will continue its proactive operations to curb criminal activities and ensure public safety," she stated. Investigations are ongoing to identify other associates involved in this network.
