The countdown for the Punjab local body elections has begun as all the political parties have almost completed their campaigns. To woo the voters, various parties have come up with their manifestoes and guarantees. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has come up with 5 guarantees, BJP has also made big promises, but Congress is yet to announce their manifesto. Votings for the Punjab local body elections including for Jalandhar Municipal Corporation will take place on December 21, 2024. 

Jalandhar Municipal Corporation Elections 2024: Who promised what?

A few days back, AAP Punjab President Aman Arora announced 5 guarantees that they will fulfill if they win the elections and their party appoints the Mayor. The guarantees included- 100 Electric Buses, 24/7 Safe Drinking Water for West and North Jalandhar, Parking Facilities for Raink Bazar, Removal of All 28 Dumping Sites, Addressing Stray Animals issues, and the development of Burton Park. 

Notably, AAP will be fighting the local body election for the first time since it formed its government in the state led by CM Bhagwant Singh Mann. 

BJP on the other hand has promised 24/7 water supply to residents and closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) cover across the city. BJP has also promised to create a single-window system for issuing and clearing building plans for commercial and residential properties and ensure scientific management of garbage.

As mentioned above, Congress is yet to announce its manifesto for the Jalandhar Municipal Elections 2024. 

Top 10 Faces Fighting in Jalandhar MC Elections 2024

Congress has been facing a tough fight from AAP. Jagdish Raja who was the Mayor of Jalandhar was from the Congress party. However, Raja has now joined AAP and will fight the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation Elections 2024 from ward number 64. 

AAP candidate Aruna Arora is fighting from ward number 33. Aruna Arora is councillor of Jalandhar's posh area Model Town and she is very active in politics. Vaneet Dhir who has been fielded by AAP from ward number 62 was previously in the BJP. Anu Matta (Madhuri) is the Joint Secretary of the Jullundur Gymkhana Club. In March 2024, Progressive Group’s Anu Matta won over Achievers’ Sumit Sharma for the post of Joint Secretary with a margin of about 320 votes. 

Balraj Thakur is senior Congress councillor and he has been fielded from Ward number 32. Last time, Balraj Thakur was one of the top contenders to be Jalandhar's Mayor. From ward number 25, Congress has fielded Uma Beri, Uma Beri is the wife of Rajinder Beri. Rajinder Beri has been an MLA from Jalandhar Central Constituency in the past. 

AAP has fielded Amit Dhall from Ward number 24. Amit Dhall's brother Dinesh Dhall fought the State Assembly Election from Jalandhar North on AAP's ticket. 

From ward number 58, BJP has fielded Rajan Angural, brother of Sheetal Angural. For the unversed, Sheetal Angural was the MLA from Jalandhar. However, before the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Sheetal Angural joined the BJP and resigned from the MLA post.   

Harsharan Kaur is the wife of Surinder Singh. Surinder Singh is a former councillor and a hockey promoter. Harsharan Kaur has been fielded by Congress from Ward number 35.
