On receiving the information about the incident, the police of Thana-3 and the fire brigade team reached the spot. At present, the police have sealed the area. No one will be allowed to go on the said road. As per new information received in the Jalandhar Ice Factor Leak Update, at least two people fainted in the area.
Initial reports suggest that the gas that has been leaked in the Jalandhar Ice Factory is ammonia (NH3). Ammonia is a poisonous gas that is made up of 1 nitrogen and 3 hydrogen atoms. It is a colorless and light gas with a pungent smell. It is used to make fertilizer and as a cooling substance in ice-making factories.
Generally, ammonia is not harmful, but if it is inhaled in large quantities, it can even be fatal. This gas has irritating properties which cause great harm to health. When the amount of ammonia in the air increases, a feeling of suffocation begins. This can cause itching in the skin, burning in the throat, nose, and respiratory tract and the person may faint.
Ammonia reacts quickly with water. Due to this, it is advised that on coming in contact with this gas, the eyes and face should be washed with plenty of water. It is a substance that dissolves quickly in water, so on washing the face with water, it dissolves and gets separated from the body and the reaction reduces.
A woman was quoted sharing what she felt when was present in the area. The woman said that she had come to take medicine, but suddenly she started suffocating. The woman became unconscious there. After which the woman was somehow taken out of the said place with the help of the shopkeeper and other people. When the woman was taken away from the said area and water was given to her, she came to her senses and breathed freely.
