Local bodies elections of Punjab were concluded and results were declared on December 21, 2024. For Jalandhar MC, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) became the single largest party winning 38 out of 85 wards. Later, independent councillors and winning candidates from other parties joined AAP pushing it to a majority mark of 43 which is essential for the Mayor's post. As per sources in the known development, the house may conduct a meeting on January 13 or on January 14. The announcement of the Mayor candidate may take place during that. Notably, sources in the known development further inform that more winning councillors may join the AAP. AAP on the other hand is making sure to increase its winning mark so that its candidate becomes Mayor even if cross voting takes place. During the house meeting, AAP may announce their Mayor candidate. If the BJP and Congress also announce their Mayor candidate, then it will lead to an election in the Jalandhar MC.
Election of Mayor within 1 month after MC Election is vital
As per reports, the new Mayor who will take oath will first approve the budget for the new financial year. Preparations have intensified for the swearing-in ceremony in the Municipal Corporation. The reason for this is that when new councillors are elected in the corporation elections, a new mayor is elected within a month. Rules for the oath-taking process have been laid down in Section 38 of the Punjab Municipal Act. Under this, there is a rule to elect the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor within a month.
On January 22, it will be a month since the new councillors were elected. Talking about Congress, the grand old party has not decided the face of its candidate. As per reports, a meeting has been called at the organizational level of Congress in Delhi.
