Jamia Millia Islamia celebrates 100 years of its existence, more achievements to gain

Centenary Foundation Day was celebrated by Jamia Millia Islamia on the occasion of completing 100 years.

Jamia Millia celebrated its Centenary Foundation Day on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at the Dr M.A. Ansari Auditorium forecourt. 

The principal of the Jamia Middle School Mohd Mursaleen greeted the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Najma Akhtar, the Chief Guest Hamid Ahmed, CEO Hamdard Laboratries and Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard University and other dignitaries inside the Ansari Auditorium as Foundation Day Inaugural Function is traditionally organized by Jamia Middle School. 

The function was taken off with Jamia Tarana - Anthem. Keeping Covid-19 situation in view, the gathering was restricted with strict social distancing allowed inside the Ansari Auditorium. 


List of Jamia Millia Islamia alumni who are big-name in the country

A short film on Jamia containing sound bytes of its famous alumni and influential personalities was showcased which included Former Cricketer Virender Sehwag, Filmmaker Kabeer Khan, Kunwar Danish Ali, MP, Lok Sabha, Javed Ali Khan, MP, Rajya Sabha, Senior TV journalists Rajdeep Sardesai and Ravish Kumar, Veteran Actress Sharmila Tagore, Justice(Retd.) MSA Siddiqui, Former JMI VC Shahid Mehdi(Rtd. IFS), Indian Hockey player Devesh Chauhan among others.

Chancellor, JMI, and Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla expressed her happiness and congratulated the university on attaining this milestone through a recorded video message.  

JMI Vice-Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar while addressing the event said “Jamia Millia Islamia is a unique institution. Since it believes in the philosophy of action, it casts sloth and laziness aside. This is the reason that it has been coming off with flying colours in achieving the latest educational aims and ideals set by the nation and the community”.

She further added that Jamia has always worked to strengthen the education quality by utilising the existing human and material resource. The University has aimed at improving and upgrading its teaching and non-teaching staff, who are dedicated to pursuing excellence. 

Prof. Akhtar said the University since its inception has adopted the idea of co-education and healthy mixing and growth of both genders together. 

“Jamia likes to think of a society where women will have all the opportunities to fulfil their aspirations and cultivate their interests, unchecked by any kind of discriminatory practices. They will be groomed and trained so that they can take leadership positions in different spheres of life”, she said. 


Jamia Millia Islamia gets 4 new departments 

Talking about academic and research achievements of the university she told the gathering that the UGC has granted the university permission to open four departments in the newly emergent areas of foreign languages, hospital management and hospice studies, design and innovation, and environmental sciences.

Chief Guest Hamid Ahmed in his congratulatory speech said that the two institutions can collaborate in setting up medical and Unani colleges and hospitals. He also offered to help Jamia schools and in setting up of Hakeem Abdul Hameed Chair at JMI through Hamdard National Foundation. 

The inaugural function was concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Zubair Meena, Chief Coordinator, Centenary Celebrations.
