India’s leading telecom operator, Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio, has announced a price hike to the existing rates of its mobile services and prepaid, postpaid plans. The new prices will come into effect on July 3. Jio is also restricting access to 5G unlimited data for customers.
According the new rates, prices for the existing plans have seen an increase by about 19-27 per cent. The price of the lowest recharge, the 1 GB add on pack, is being raised from Rs 25 to Rs 19, about 27 per cent increase. The postpaid plans for 30 GB data will see a whopping increase of Rs 50, going from Rs 299 to Rs 349.
Talking about the restricted 5G data access, Jio will not be provided unlimited 5G on plans below 2GB per day. "Unlimited 5G data will be available on all 2GB per day and above plans... The new plans will be made effective on July 3, 2024, and can be opted from all existing touchpoints and channels," the statement said.
As of now, subscribers availing plans priced above Rs 239 (1.5 GB per day) can access unlimited free 5G service, and the rest of the customers have to top up their plan with a Rs 61 voucher to avail unlimited 5G service.
“The introduction of new plans is a step in the direction of furthering industry innovation and driving sustainable growth through investments in 5G and AI technology” said Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. Chairman, Akash M Ambani, in a statement to the press.
According to Jio, India now leads the world in 5G data thanks to Jio true 5G, the fastest-ever 5G rollout of this scale anywhere in the world. Nearly 85% of the total 5G cells operational in India are by Jio. “With India’s only Stand-Alone True 5G network, Jio continues to provide superlative 5G experience with truly unlimited 5G data on its leading plans at no additional cost to its users” said the statement released by Jio.
