In a shocking turn of events, the Censor Board of India has halted the certification of Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut's upcoming movie Emergency which is based on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Kangana Ranaut on Friday evening took to her X handle and shared a video informing the people that although her movie was cleared for certification by the CBFC, it is now halted. Kangana in her video stated that Censor Board members are getting death threats and therefore, she is being pressured to not show Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale, the Punjab Riots, and even the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Below is what Kangana Ranaut said-

"Many rumors are going on that we have got a censor certificate for the movie Emergency but it is not true. Our film was cleared (from the Censor Board) but now the certification has been halted. The reason is Censor Board is getting lots of death threats therefore, we are being pressuried to not show the assassination of Mrs. Gandhi, Bhindrawale, Punjab riots. Then, I don't know what we will show. What happened all of a sudden the movie got blacked out. So, this is an unbelievable time for me and I am very sorry for the state of things in the country."

Apart from Kangana, Emergency also features Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik in pivotal roles. It is pertinent to mention here that  a movie cannot be released in India without certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The CBFC is a statutory body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting that regulates the public exhibition of films in India. Notably, Emergency was slated to be released in theaters on September 6, 2024. However, ever since the trailer of the movie was released, multiple Sikh organizations have objected to it and demanded to ban on the movie. Faridkot MP Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa has written a letter to the Centre to stop the release of the movie over wrongful portrayal of Sikh community.
