Kaspersky Report: 1 in 3 Indians faced cyber-attacks in 2024, AI aided hackers

Cyber threats are still increasing continuously and the report believes that increasing awareness can decrease the cases of cyber threat in India.

Web-based cyber threats had affected millions of people in India in 2024. According to a new report, one in every three Indian internet users fell victim to a cyber-attack last year.

According to this report by global cybersecurity company Kaspersky, from January to December 2024, the company detected 4, 43, 72, 823 internet-borne cyber threats on users' computers in India.

The report indicated that attacks through web browsers still remain the most used method by cyber criminals. Apart from this, the report also indicated that file-less malware is proving to be the most dangerous cyber threat because it is extremely difficult to identify them. 

Apart from this, phishing, ransomware and AI-based cyber threats were prevalent in 2024.

This report prepared on the basis of data from Kaspersky Security Network states that there has been a slight decrease in the cyber threat in India in 2024. In 2023, the company detected 6, 25, 74, 546 internet-borne cyber threats in India but in 2024 this number had decreased by 5%.

However, cyber threats are still increasing continuously. The report believes that the cyber threat in India may increase by 5%. Additionally, the report believes that increasing awareness is a big factor behind the decrease in cases of cyber threat in India.

Kaspersky has also provided some important cybersecurity tips that people can follow in order to ensure their online safety:

  • Do not download applications from unauthorized sources.
  • Do not click on links or suspicious online ads from unknown sources
  • Always use two factor authentication (2FA).
  • Create strong passwords and use a password manager.
  • Install any updates as soon as they become available.

The report has warned that cyber threats are still around and it is important to be alert to avoid them.
