In yet another disrespect for India on Canadian soil, Pro Khalistan elements on Saturday faced off with a pro-India group in the city of Calgary in Alberta. The Pro Khalistan group faced resistance from the Pro India group who were also present at the venue in large numbers. The incident occurred outside a venue where a community event welcomed India’s High Commissioner to Ottawa Sanjay Kumar Verma. The face-off between Pro Khalistan and Pro Indian groups started with slongering but it soon turned ugly when Pro Khalistan group used their daggers and swords to rip the Indian flag apart.
As per reports, at least two dozen Indo-Canadians gathered across the street from the pro-Khalistan protesters, some of whom held weapons, including at least one seen to be holding a sword up. Local police were deployed on the site and prevented the two opposing groups from physically clashing.
Notably, a similar kind of demonstration was staged at the venue hosting India’s High Commissioner to Ottawa Sanjay Kumar Verma in Surrey on March 1 and Edmonton on March 11. Due to the Khalistanis threats, the hosts had reportedly cancelled a scheduled community event in Calgary on Friday but a lunch for the High Commissioner was organised at another location on Saturday afternoon.
As per a Canadian journalist who shared the video, "At one point, two groups got too close to each other, and the police had to intervene. The meeting at the McDougall Centre was cancelled, and the Indian diplomat whom the protesters accuse of being involved in the murder of one of their members did not show up."
