Thane: In the district of Maharashtra, three labourers died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a sewage treatment plant.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when the labourers were cleaning a choked valve in a chamber of non-operational sewage treatment plant at Mira Bhayandar Township, said the police.

One of the labourers died of asphyxiation after he entered the sewage treatment plant. Two more labourers went inside to look for him but they also inhaled toxic gas and died.

The deceased were identified as Muzaffar Moulik (24), Rafique Mandal (50) and Mofjum (18).The injured, Akthar Mulla (17), has been hospitalised.

The labourers were hired by a civic contractor from a public spot for the cleaning work but not given any protective gear for safety, police added.

A case was registered and investigation is underway.
