The PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, launched by the government on February 13, 2024, has achieved a major milestone—installing solar plants in over 10 lakh households across India by March 10, 2025. The scheme, with a budget of₹75,021 crore, aims to provide 300 units of free electricity to 1 crore households and generate an annual income of₹15,000 for families installing rooftop solar panels.
Government’s Announcement
Union Renewable Energy Minister Pralad Joshi shared the achievement on his official X handle, calling it a "historic milestone" in India's journey toward renewable energy self-reliance.
"India has achieved a historic achievement in solar energy. The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has empowered 10 lakh households with solar energy," he stated.
How Does the Scheme Benefit the Common Man?
Free Electricity: Households installing solar plants receive 300 units of free electricity per month, reducing dependence on traditional power sources and cutting electricity bills significantly.
Income Generation: Families sell excess electricity back to the grid through net metering, earning approximately₹15,000 per year—creating a passive income source.
Massive Cost Savings: Installing a 3 KW solar plant costs around ₹1.45 lakh, but government subsidies cover ₹78,000. The remaining ₹67,000 can be financed through low-interest bank loans, making solar adoption affordable for middle- and lower-income families.
Subsidy and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): The government transfers the subsidy amount directly to the consumer’s account after verification to enable convenience and transparency.
Energy Independence & Sustainability: The scheme helps India mitigate reliance on fossil fuels, decreases carbon emissions, and ensures energy independence for the citizens in the future.
