After the immense success of Fallout, streaming giant Amazon Prime Video shared a poster teasing the release of an adaptation of yet another popular video game series. Titled “Like a Dragon: Yakuza”, the web series is based on Sega’s successful Like a Dragon game series, previously known as Yakuza. The series will be directed by Masaharu Take, best known for the Netflix drama series The Naked Director. The series will star Ryoma Takeuchi (Kamen Rider Drive) as Kazama Kiryu.
As per reports, the series was announced today at a press conference at the picturesque Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. The series is a six-episode drama and will feature an original screenplay based on the first game in the series, Yakuza (2005). It will be set in two time periods, 1995 and 2005, and follows Kiryu and three of his childhood friends. The show’s press release describes Kiryu, as “a fearsome and peerless Yakuza warrior with a strong sense of justice, duty, and humanity”, quite similarly to the games.
The poster, as shared by Amazon Prime Video on social media, was a nostalgia hit for the fans of the games as it shows Takeuchi as Kiryu with the iconic Yakuza tattoo on his back. Fans of the game will recognise the dragon tattoo. Here’s hoping that Goro Majima will also show up at some point. The Like a Dragon game series is developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (which translates to Like a Dragon from Japanese) and published by Sega. There are a total of 8 games in the series chronicling the story of Kiryu as the main character.
The series will be released on Prime Video this October 24. See the poster.
