Lil Tay's death was confirmed after her family issued a statement on her Instagram revealing that her brother also died. Lil Tay whose real name was Claire Hope rose to fame in 2018 when her video flaunting her wealth went viral in which she had used profanity. Lil Tay was a well-known celeb on social media and enjoyed a massive fan base on Instagram with over 3 million followers. Lil Tay's heartbreaking death was confirmed by her family who issued a vague statement. The rapper's family shared a statement on her Instagram over Lil Tay's death which stated, It is with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of our beloved Claire's sudden and tragic passing. We have no words to express the unbearable loss and indescribable pain. This outcome was entirely unexpected, and has left us all in shock. Her brother's passing adds an even more unimaginable depth to our grief. During this time of immense sorrow, we kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this overwhelming loss, as the circumstances surrounding Claire and her brother's passing are still under investigation. Claire will forever remain in our hearts, her absence leaving an irreplaceable void that will be felt by all who knew and loved her."
Although Lil Tay's death reason was not revealed by her family, fans sensed that there must be some foul play in the YouTuber's death. A user wrote in the comment section, "Nah I feel like they did something dirty to her." Another user wrote, "you exploited her and now you’ve probably killed her… so sad". Notably, Lil Tay's death has been embroiled in controversies as her former manager Harry Tsang did not confirm her death. Harry Tsang was quoted by a portal saying, "I have been in communication with individuals who have an intimate understanding of the family’s situation,” Tsang said. “Given the complexities of the current circumstances, I am at a point where I cannot definitively confirm or dismiss the legitimacy of the statement issued by the family.” It is pertinent to mention here that Claire was believed to be living in Vancouver, Canada as of 2021 and a US portal approached the Police Department over Lil Tay's death. However, the PD said, "As of now, we are not aware and are not investigating."

As per reports, Lil Tay's brother Jason and her mother Angela Tian were staging and directing her YouTube videos. Her videos sparked a major row as they showed Lil Tay skipping schools, starting fights, using profanity, and smoking hookah. A report of 2018 stated that the YouTuber shared a message asking for help to her Instagram Story, before erasing all of her videos hours later. Three months later, posts began appearing on her social media account, alleging that her father, Chris was abusive. However, Lil Tay's father refuted the claims, asserting that he was trying to protect her well-being by distancing her from potentially harmful influences and financial exploitation.
These allegations and counter-allegations prompted a custody battle between her parents in 2020. As per reports, Clara's parents wanted to raise her in their own way. Her mom, reportedly wanted her to do whatever she wanted, even if that meant continuing her foul-mouthed antics. Notably, in 2021, Lil Tay’s brother initiated a GoFundMe campaign in 2021 claiming she was battling for her life, freedom, and future. He even accused their father of physical and mental abuse, embezzling millions of her earnings, seizing control of her career, enforcing silence, and striving for complete custody.
