In a major development, Public holiday was announced on December 6 on Saturday by the Punjab Government. Due to this, all schools, colleges, government offices, boards, corporations and other institutions of the state will remain closed. December 6 is the martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji. There will be a holiday in Punjab on this occasion.
Before Punjab, the Chandigarh administration had also announced a holiday on December 6. In commemoration of the martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, this special holiday has been amended by the Punjab government.
Guru Teg Bahadur Ji was the 9th Guru of Sikhism
Guru Teg Bahadur Ji was the 9th Guru of Sikhism. He is remembered for his courage, sacrifice and protection of religion. Guru Teg Bahadur Ji was born on 1 April 1621 in Amritsar, Punjab to Guru Hargobind and Mata Nanaki. His original name was 'Tyag Mal'. But due to his courageous deeds and unparalleled sacrifice, he was given the title of 'Tegh Bahadur'.
Efforts to protect religion and humanity
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji dedicated his life to humanity, religious freedom and the struggle against injustice. When the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb started a campaign to eradicate Hinduism and forced conversion, Guru Ji raised his voice against these atrocities. In 1675, Kashmiri Pandits appealed to Guru Ji for help.
Another long weekend loading in Punjab?
It is pertinent to mention here that December 6 is Friday. The next two days are Saturday and Sunday. Therefore, it is possible that Punjabis may enjoy a long weekend of 3 days. However, December 7 is not the second Saturday, hence December 7 will not be a holiday especially in banks. However, many work places observe and even school observe half day on Saturday.
