Soon after the dramatic takeover of Twitter by the world’s richest person, the company announced the laying off of over half of its 7500 workforces worldwide, which also included almost the entire staff based here in India.

Twitter laid off the majority of its 200-odd employees based here in India, which is part of Elon Musk’s decision to truncate the workforce after taking over Twitter. Through various reports, companies have backed its move saying it’s an effort to cut down the cost.

Responding to the company’s move its new and only director Elon Musk made a mention of backing the move through a tweet made earlier this morning.

In the tweet he wrote, “Regarding Twitter’s reduction in force, unfortunately, there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day. Everyone who exited was offered 3 months of severance, which is 50% more than legally required.”

Pertinently the move has affected all the business verticals, which includes Marketing, Communications, and Partnership in its India office except for retaining the skeletal staff in sales.

Several employees here in India responded over the laying off and knew the inevitability of the move. An employee while talking to the Businessline said, “Everybody saw it coming. All of us know how man functions and we knew we would be impacted when Elon Musk took over. None of us were surprised.”

Twitter’s employee base of over 200 was spread across three offices in India based in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. However, it largely remains unclear whether the company has given any form of severance pay to the employees whose services have been terminated here in India. Although, globally there are reports that show that the employees laid off from Twitter have received Severance pay.
