In a tragic accident, the jeep of devotees returning from a religious place overturned on the banks of the canal, killing 2 children and 2 women, with one child missing. Sukhpreet Singh (7), is believed to have been washed away by the canal. A Police search for the missing child in underway. The accident took place near the Bahlolpur bridge of the Sirhind Canal, flowing near Machhiwada in Ludhiana district. Two women, Mahinder Kaur (65) and Karamjit Kaur (52) died during treatment, while two children Gaganjot Kaur (15) and a girl of unknown name died on the spot.
According to the information received, there were more than 15 women, children, and men from villages Nizampur, Dangowal and Chhibra under Payal police station. As per reports, they had gone to Dera Baba Badbhag Singh yesterday to pay obeisance. All these members of the family were going back to their village from Badbhag this morning in a new Mahindra pickup jeep, when on the way the vehicle lost its balance on the banks of Sirhind canal near Bahlolpur village. The canal flows about 30 feet (9.14 m) below the road.
The trees stopped the entire vehicle from falling into the canal, but one child, Sukhpreet Singh, fell into the water and was washed away, while everyone else was seriously injured. Twelve injured devotees are being treated at Chamkaur Sahib Hospital, the condition of many of them is said to be critical.
Witnesses called a crane and pulled out the vehicle and also sent the injured to the hospital for treatment. The injured included Amanpreet Kaur resident of Sihoda, Sarup Singh resident of Cheema, Pritpal Kaur resident of Sihoda, Roop Singh Niwali Laddad, Sandeep Kaur resident of Nizampur, Praveen Kaur resident of Nizampur, Baljinder Singh resident of Sihoda, Sukhveer Kaur Falod, Gyan Kaur resident of Nizampur, Manpreet Kaur resident of Dango, Jeevan Singh resident of Sihoda and Gurpreet Singh resident of Nizampur.
