The Luxury fashion house, Gucci based in Italy is selling a dress that resembles a lot like Indian traditional kurta and desi Twitter is going gaga over it.
The "organic linen kaftan" that has floral embroidery has been priced at $3,500 on the luxury brand's website - that is an exorbitant ₹ 2.5 lakh, approximately. The made in Italy kurta has floral embroidery and a neck opening with a self-tie tassel. Customers said to purchase the kurta they have to go for a monthly instalments option to purchase this kurta.
This won’t be the first time that international fashion houses have come with bizarre products. Luxury brand Bottega Venata had sold telephone cord’ necklaces for over ₹1 lakh and Balenciaga’s ‘blanket bags’ costing over ₹2 lakh which reminded Indians of the humble ‘kambal’.
Indians are reacting on Twitter and look not happy neither cultural appropriation nor about the price tag. Users are saying the price is too high saying similar outfits can be bought for a small amount.
The kurta just looks like those simple one’s that hang in our wardrobes and are available at a cheaper price in the Indian street markets.
Sharing two images of the ivory-coloured kaftan, one Twitter user wrote, "Gucci selling an Indian kurta for 2.5 lakhs? I'll get the same thing for 500 bucks.”
Check how desis expressed their shock:-
