The Madras High Court on Tuesday slammed the Chennai Civic body being irresponsible to take requisite steps to control floods as per the suo motu public interest litigation petition regarding the obstacles faced by residents.
The discussion over floods in the city has been done while hearing of GCC by Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice P.D. Audikesavalu.
The High Court asked Greater Chennai Corporation what authorities were doing since 2015 following the devastating floods in the city and they also warned the civic body over suo motu proceedings if the present situation was not brought under control, the proceedings would be initiated this weekend.
The death toll in Tamil Nadu due to rain-related incidents on Tuesday climbed to five, said Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran, adding that 538 huts were damaged and four houses fully damaged. “More damage is expected if rain intensifies,” the minister further said.
“We are not a backward State. We are the most advanced State on many parameters. This cannot be the state of a leading State in the country", he added.
The Chief Justice said the Corporation ought to have taken corrective measures and made sure that the city does not float during heavy rains. He said, in all fairness, the city should not have been facing the situation that it was facing now with many localities remaining inundated.
