The world's largest gathering Mahakumbh 2025 has started to get global attention but this time not for good reasons. Global agencies like the New York Post, Reuters, and other media portals have reported that Mahakumbh Stampede's death toll has reached 40 and more than 70 people have been injured. However, True Scoop cannot verify this claim as the government is yet to issue any official statement on death toll. For the unversed, a stampede broke out at around 2 o'clock late at night before Amrit Snan on the Sangam coast of Prayagraj. According to an eyewitness, people started running as soon as the stampede started.

It is pertinent to mention here that no official confirmation on the death toll has been given yet.

How did a huge crowd reach Sangam Nose?

It was claimed that the security agencies are fully alert to make Mahakumbh 2025 safe and well organized. Uttar Pradesh Police, Kumbh Mela Police, NSG, ATS, NDRF, and other paramilitary forces are constantly practicing mock drills to ensure tight security arrangements. Obviously, all the teams and police forces knew that the crowd of crores of people would come to Sangam Nose for the Sangam bath.

Sangam Nose is a triangular landmass that is sandwiched between the river Ganga in the north and the river Yamuna in the south, before they merge. The Triveni Sangam, which is the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers, is a sacred pilgrimage destination of the Hindus. Mauni Amavasya is considered to be the biggest bath of Kumbh. It has mythological importance.

In such a situation, why was it not estimated that there would be many people who would reach Sangam late at night and would wait there to take a bath on the auspicious time of Mauni Amavasya? Who was estimating the pressure of the crowd at Sangam Nose? Were the teams deployed in other sectors informed that the crowd is increasing here?  This is a matter of investigation.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath's reaction to Mahakumbh Stampede

Addressing the media, UP CM Yogi Adityanath said, "Around 8-10 crore devotees are present in Prayagraj today. There is continuous pressure due to the movement of devotees towards the Sangam Nose. A few devotees have suffered serious injuries when they tried to cross barricading on Akhara Marg. The injured have been shifted to hospitals for medical treatment. Since Mauni Amavasya mahurat started last night, a large number of devotees have been coming in.

The PM has taken stock of the situation four times till now. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Governor Anandiben Patel are also continuously taking reports of the situation. The situation in Prayagraj is under control but the crowd size remains massive. The saints of different Akhaaras have humbly said that devotees should take holy dip first and once crowds reduce Akharas will proceed for the holy dip. There are large crowds at Sangam Nose, Nag Vasuki Marg, and Sangam Marg.

I appeal to the devotees to not pay attention to any rumour. Ghats have been made in the entire Kumbh area, devotees don't need to move towards Sangam nose only. Devotees should take holy dip at the ghats nearest to them. We are ensuring proper medical treatment of the injured persons. The Railways have organised special trains from different stations of Prayagraj region to take devotees back to their respective destinations."
