Maharashtra: Man booked for forcibly marrying and raping niece

The police on Wednesday said that a 36-year-old-man who has been identified as Ajay Singh has been arrested for allegedly raping and marrying a minor relative in Maharashtra Palghar district.

He had kept the 17-year-old niece captive at his home, informed the Palghar police spokesperson Hemant Kumar Katkar. He allegedly married her forcibly and had repeatedly raped her between November 2017 and December last year, said the official. The accused used to beat up the girl when she resisted his moves and also prevented her from meeting her parents, he said.

However, the girl managed to escape from his clutches and also showed courage by approaching the police. Based on the complaint, Singh was arrested on Wednesday and a case has been registered against him under sections such as rape, abduction to compel for marriage, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation, and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
