In a major achievement , Malerkotla Police have arrested a key accused for threatening and making extortion calls to a renowned Punjabi singer of district Malerkotla.
The prime accused was held red-handed from Amritsar in a covert operation supported by ground work and technical investigation.
The identified culprit is Mehtab Singh, a 30-year-old long-standing admirer of the renowned singer. Exploiting knowledge about the singer's family, Mehtab employed this information as a façade to extort money. He engaged in a series of threatening phone calls to the prominent singer, demanding substantial sums of money
Divulging more details to the press media, the senior superintendent of police, Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said that acting on intelligence inputs, a team of Malerkotla Police managed to track down Mehtab and caught him red-handed from a hideout in Amritsar's Gujjarpura locality where he was hatching new plans. His mobile number used for making the extortion calls has been corroborated with the technical evidence in the previous FIRs.
SSP Khakh stated this timely intervention has prevented the ongoing harassment faced by the singer and will act as a strong deterrent for such extortion bids against those working in the Punjabi music industry.
In this regard a case FIR No. 27 dated 19.07.2023 under section 387,506 IPC registered against the accused at police station, city Ahmedgarh.
The arrested accused will be produced in the local court and his remand will be taken to further investigate the case and to unearth that if he made more such calls to other singers of Punjabi music industry.
SSP Khakh emphasised the importance of swift action, advising individuals not to hesitate but promptly report any such incidents to the authorities. This proactive approach ensures that offenders are swiftly apprehended. The Punjab Police stands ready to assist and safeguard you.
SSP Khakh added that the Malerkotla Police have issued a stern warning, expressing zero tolerance for such criminal activities. Offenders will face severe consequences.
