The Man Who Loved UFOs is a true that revolves around a real-life Argentine journalist José de Zer who rose to fame for claiming to find proof of alien life and the sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in a small hill town of the country. However, later, it was revealed that José de Zer fabricated evidence by way of fake interviews, falsified paintings and planting of props to mislead the public that he had found UFO landing spot. All he had to go on was a burnt, perfectly circular patch of meadow whose origins were unknown.

Talking about real José de Zer, the Argentine journalist was born in 1941 in Buenos Aires and was named Jose Keizer at birth. The Sun reported that José de Zer's family was Jewish and he went on to serve as a reserve lieutenant in the Six Days War in Israel, in 1967. After serving in the military, he switched careers and became a journalist which set him on a journey to become an expert in the supernatural.
He worked on a radio show named Generación Espontánea, before landing a job on the news program ‘Nuevediario’ in 1984. José de Zer's fame skyrocketed in 1986, when he encountered a story about a burnt pasture near to the Uritorco mountains in Córdoba, Spain. José de Zer claimed that this was a UFO landing site and soon produced footage which showed UFO hauntings, lights in the sky and bizarre hieroglyphics.
