Society often treats periods as it is one of the grossest phenomena that exist, however, they forget to consider that it is actually a significant process that leads to the making of a society. People don't discuss menstruation openly and period talks are generally brushed under the carpet, though it is as normal as any other biological function in the human body.
May 28, is marked as Menstrual Hygiene Day and today we make another effort to normalize periods, address societal stigma over the topic and create awareness about the importance of menstrual hygiene.
In several countries, girls avoid going to school during their periods. Women in rural areas or poverty-driven regions still use paper, leaves, ashes or other harmful substances instead of sanitary napkins.
On this day dedicated to menstrual hygiene, the UN describes Menstrual health as a human right. Tweet by UN reads, “Menstrual health is a human right. Yet, menstruation can result in discrimination, stigma and exclusion against women and girls.”

In India, a very high number of the female population faces discrimination when they are on their periods. Women are not allowed to enter the kitchen during periods, they can’t cook, must avoid entering temples and religious places and should not touch pickles, ghee, etc. In several backward areas, women are even made to stay uncomfortably in a tiny room outside houses, instead of providing comfort to them.
Girls when they get their first periods are often scared and confused due to inadequate knowledge. They are not allowed to discuss their doubts and problems openly and are left unaware of the concept of menstrual hygiene.
Here are do’s and don’ts for first-timers for happy and healthy periods.
Sanitation methods
Sanitary napkins are the most common and generally known products used during periods. In several rural areas, women don't even use a sanitary napkin and adjust with cloth, paper or other unhygienic objects due to unawareness or the cost factor.
Besides sanitary napkins, tampons and menstrual cups are other options which you can use during periods based on your comfortability. Most women suggest a menstrual cup as the best sanitation method as it is a one-time investment. You can buy a menstrual cup and that would be all for at least 3 to 5 years. Also, it is eco-friendly as it reduces waste.

Be ready with an emergency kit
It is beneficial to stay ready with all the necessary supplies. Carry a multi-purpose kit containing pads/ tampons, extra underwear, pain relief medicine or pain relief patches. Always be prepared so when it's time you don’t have to ask anyone for help.
Also, do ask for help if you are stuck in a situation where you don't have a pad, and do help others stuck in a similar situation. Stay confident and do whatever you planned to do. Don’t let periods change your plans.
If someone is uncomfortable with you because you are on your period, it is their problem. You keep rising and shining.
