Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina's performances at the Games, according to Anurag Thakur, have put the North East on the global map.
"Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain won two of India's six individual medals at the 2020 Olympics. They have put northeast not just on the Indian map, but also on the world map, with their performances "remarked Anurag Thakur at a recent occasion.
Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina, and star shuttler PV Sindhu were featured on the cover of Vogue magazine earlier this month.
Lovlina Borgohain, a bronze medalist in the Tokyo Olympics, said on Friday that she plans to pursue professional boxing in the near future.
"I've always wanted to be a professional boxer. In professional boxing, there aren't many Indian women. On the margins of Sportstar's North-East Sports Conclave, Lovlina remarked, "I want to leave a mark there as well."
"But first and foremost, I want to win an Olympic gold medal in Paris in 2024," she continued.
Lovlina, the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, said her hometown has changed dramatically since her triumph in Tokyo. "A new stadium is on the way, which is fantastic news for all the youngsters in my area. There has been such an inflow of children that we are unsure where to train them till the stadium is complete. That, if one medal is capable of bringing in so much, imagine what a medal glut could do to Assam,” she said.
The Olympics were hosted this year under COVID-19-related limitations, and the event was held behind closed doors. The Tokyo Olympics included over 11,000 athletes from over 200 countries.
With seven medals, India had its best-ever performance in the Olympics (one gold, two silver, and four bronze).
