Due to the new rules of TRAI, millions of Indian mobile users may face problems in getting OTP i.e. One Time Password. Major telecom operators like Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, and Reliance Jio have time till 30th November 2024 to implement the new rules of TRAI. If you use a mobile phone then you must be aware of OTP. OTP is used to verify the identity of the user.

As per reports, nearly 1.7 billion messages are sent every single day in India. By some estimates, a billion of them are OTPs. Aadhar Verification, UPI Payments, E-Governance, Bank Transactions and even booking movie tickets; everything needs an OTP. It is not only a security measure in India but it has become a way of life.

Why did TRAI introduce new rules for OTPs?

The purpose of these new rules is to prevent fake OTP and other fraudulent messages. Telecom operators will have to trace the source of the message so that they can block fake messages and protect users. If telecom operators are unable to implement these rules on time, then there may be a problem in getting OTP. There may be a delay in getting OTP from services like banking, e-commerce, and social media or it may stop completely.

To prevent this, TRAI has planned to gradually implement the rules. By November 30, operators will warn those companies that are not following the rules. After this, such messages will be blocked from December 1.

This regulation requires telecom companies to make provisions to trace all the messages. The initial deadline was October 31, but after demands from service operators, TRAI extended it to November 30. Some reports claimed that this could lead to delays in customers receiving OTPs, but TRAI dismissed them as "factually incorrect".

TRAI on claims that OTPs will be delayed wrote on X, "This is factually incorrect. TRAI has mandated the Access Providers to ensure message traceability. It will not delay delivery of any message."

Therefore, it can be said that OTPs will continue to come on phones in India but telecom companies will now have to remain vigilant.
