Motera, world's largest stadium has been renamed as Narendra Modi Stadium. After the change of name, opposition parties and users of micro blogging sites have taken taken a dig at the government.
The world's largest cricket ground with a capacity of 1.32 lakh spectators was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday. Home Minister Amit Shah was also present during this period. Shah is a Lok Sabha member from Gandhinagar. This stadium falls under his constituency.
There were claims that Motera stadium was to be named as Sardar Patel Stadium but eventually it was renamed on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Nitin Patel, the Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat said the name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was not associated with Motera stadium. In a video released on Press Information Bureau, he added, "This stadium is owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) and it was always known as the Motera Stadium. So there is no question of renaming it now. It was Narendra Modi, who had first floated the idea to demolish the old stadium and build a new one when he was the GCA president."
The account PIB in Gujarat tweeted, "Deputy Chief
Minister Shri Nitin Patel clarifies that this stadium was never named after
Sardar Patel but it was known as a "Motera Stadium" only. it is
renamed as Narendra Modi Stadium. Actually huge new coming up sports complex
has been named as Sardar Patel Sports complex."
