The latest Netflix release 'Mary' has become a firecracker, inflaming heated debates across social media and beyond. Whether it is casting choice or the bold reinterpretation of themes of the bible the movie has managed to ruffle feathers among Palestinian advocates and conservative Christmas alike.
Directed by D.J Caruso, the movie Mary explores The life of the Virgin Mary from her childhood to her role as the mother of Jesus. The premise resonates with the world but at the execution that has caused an uproar. Noa Cohen, The actress has been cast in the titular role and the choice has become a flashpoint among those who claim that the film filmmakers are politically insensitive.
A Storm among the casting choices
Palestinian supporters argue that casting an Israeli actress in the role of Mary, a figure deeply rooted in Middle Eastern history, attempts to erase the cultural and historical Palestinian narrative. Amid ongoing tensions in the region, they see this as a deliberate alignment of marrying with the modern Israeli identity.
