The UK has always been one of the popular destinations for Indian students, but due to recent changes in immigration rules many students are now questioning whether the UK is still a good choice for higher education. Changes in the UK immigration rules:
As of January 2024, international students (except PhD and government-sponsored students) cannot bring their spouses or children with them. This has become an issue for multiple Indian students who want to study abroad with their family.
As per the rule introduced in January 2025, students must show 11% more money to cover living costs before they can get a visa. This rule has made studying in the UK even more expensive for the immigrant students.
The cost of student visas and health surcharges has also increased, making it harder for the students to afford studying in the UK.
Due of these changes, now fewer Indian students are choosing the UK for their higher studies. As per the reports, there is a 23% drop in Indian student enrolments. Multiple students are now choosing other countries like Canada, Australia and Germany, for higher studies as they have friendlier immigration policies.
Why did the UK change immigration rules?
The UK government said that these changes are necessary in order to control migration and reduce pressure on public services like healthcare and housing. However, critics said that these restrictions will affect the UK’s economy as international students bring billions of pounds into the country every year.
The UK has world-class universities, but due to these new rules, it has become less welcoming than before. If students are planning to study there, they must prepare for higher costs, no family support and tougher visa conditions.
