The Government of India has announced new and increased fines for violations of Motor Vehicle Rules or Traffic Rules. Notably, the rules and regulations to govern the traffic on Indian roads have been tightened, and the new fines are approximately ten times higher than the previous fines.
The new fines have been implemented since March 2025, and now the violator(s) will be fined ten times higher.
Know the full list of increased fines and penalties as follows -
Drink and Drive -
The fine or penalty for an individual who has been caught driving a vehicle after drinking alcohol or any other intoxicating substance, then he or she will have to pay Rs 10,000 or will be jailed for up to 6 months. Earlier, the fine was just Rs 1000 to Rs 1500.
Meanwhile, if the crime is repeated and the same individual is caught driving a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicating substance, then the increased fine of Rs 15,000 or two years of jail will be implemented.
Driving without a helmet -
If an individual is caught driving a two-wheeler without a helmet, then he or she may face a penalty of Rs 1,000, which was earlier Rs 100. Apart from this, the licence of an individual could get cancelled for three months. Additionally, if someone is driving without a seat belt, then a fine of Rs 1,000 will be applied.
Using the mobile phone while driving -
If an individual is caught using the mobile phone, a fine of Rs 5,000 will be issued. Notably, earlier, the fine was only Rs 500.
Not having necessary documents -
The lack of different documents will lead to different amounts of fines. According to an official update by the government, the fines are as follows:
- Lack of Driving License - Rs 5000
- Lack of Vehicle Insurance - Rs 2000 or jail for 3 months and if the violation is repeated then the fine will be increased to Rs 4000.
- Lack of Pollution Certificate - Rs 10,000 or jail for 6 months.
Triple riding on a two-wheeler or overspeed -
The fine for triple riding on a two-wheeler has increased to Rs 1,000, and for overspeeding or dangerous driving has increased to Rs 5,000. Along with this, if someone don’t give way to emergency providing vehicles, such as ambulance and fire brigades then they have to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.
Signal jumping -
According to the new rules, if an individual will be caught jumping a red signal then he or she will be fined with Rs 5,000.
Overloading -
The fine for overloading has now been increased to Rs 20,000, which earlier was 2,000.
Stricter rules for people younger than 18 years -
For juveniles, the traffic rules have increased to Rs 25,000, with jail for three years. Along with this, vehicle registration could get canceled, and the teen will not get a driving license till the age of 25 years.
