The newly appointed director general of Punjab police Siddharth Chattopadhyaya has responded to the recent sacrilege cases in the state.
Taking both incidents into account, the DGP tweeted, "I have taken serious note of the unfortunate incidents in Amritsar and Kapurthala. Any attempt to violate the communal harmony
in the state will be dealt with a firm hand."
"Stern action will be taken against all those disturbing the law and order in Punjab," he added.
The 1986 batch IPS officer S Chattopadhyaya was made officiating DGP on December 16, removing IPS Sahota from the top post.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa who also holds the portfolio of Home Ministry said that the state government has sought 10 years of imprisonment for people found
guilty of committing sacrilege. The minister also formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the Golden Temple sacrilege case, which will present a report in two days.
Deputy CM said that it was a very unfortunate incident and the police will get to the bottom of it. Randhawa also spoke to Jathedar Sri Akal Takht Sahib and President SGPC. He said that
they would get information regarding each and every aspect of the incident.
In less than 24 hours, there have been two attempts of sacrilege of Shri Guru Granth Sahib in Punjab. On Sunday evening, a man tried to discrete the holy scripture inside Golden Temple in
Amritsar. He was immediately nabbed by the officials and was later thrashed to death by a crowd of pilgrims.
Today, another man was caught in Kapurthala trying to commit sacrilege in Kapurthala gurudwara. The young man was already disrespecting Nishan Sahib when he was caught by the locals. He
was later brutally beaten with rods.
According to the latest reports, the youth was hacked to death by a mob who scuffled with police to attack the accused.
