The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police led by Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma have arrested a news portal reporter, Deepak Rana alias Deepak Thapar, in connection with the death of Anil Kumar Mani, a dhaba owner. The arrest follows the registration of FIR No. 121 dated 26.11.2024 under Section 105, 3(5) BNS at Police Station Division No. 4.
Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma stated that the incident occurred on November 20, 2024, when a group of individuals, including Deepak Rana, allegedly confronted Anil Kumar at Mani Dhaba near Nehru Garden School, accusing him of selling worm-infested vegetables. Despite repeated pleas from the victim and his son, Manav Mani, that Anil was a heart patient, the group reportedly continued to harass him.
The escalating argument reportedly caused severe stress to Anil, who collapsed while being rushed to the hospital by his son and tragically passed away on the way. Based on a complaint from the victim's son, the police initiated an investigation and arrested the accused Deepak Rana near Congress Bhawan on November 27.
The CP further stated that the accused is being presented before the court, and police remand will be sought to further investigate the involvement of other individuals, including those who allegedly live-streamed the altercation. “This is a grave case where harassment directly led to a loss of life, and we are committed to ensuring justice,” Swapan Sharma asserted
