The mother of Amritpal Singh, the jailed radical Sikh preacher who took the oath of office as a member of Parliament on Friday, insisted that her son be released right away so that he may focus on the subjects for which he ran in the elections. She stated her son is not a Khalistan supporter.
After Singh was sworn in, festivities erupted in his hometown of Jallupur Khera in Amritsar as well as in the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary seat, where sweets were distributed.
Balwinder Kaur, Singh's mother, thanked God and added that the 'Sangat' (community) is delighted after Amritpal was sworn in to the Parliament. "We demand that he be released immediately so that he can thank supporters and work on the issues on the basis of which elections were won," Kaur told reporters at her home.
"He is not a supporter of Khalistani," Kaur declared. 'By speaking about Punjab's rights and saving Punjab's youth (from drugs), can anyone become a supporter of Khalistan" She further stated that "He fought elections within the ambit of the Constitution and took oath. One should not say such a thing. He will raise Punjab's issues and will save youth (from drugs)".
The “Waris Punjab De” chief took oath in the chamber of the Lok Sabha speaker after completing formalities. He was brought to the Parliament house by security personnel this morning. Amritpal is lodged in the Dibrugarh jail in Assam' for offences under the National Security Act (NSA). He was flown from Assam to Delhi on a four-day custody parole, for taking oath.
