Shashi Tharoor, a Congress politician, shared a video of himself swinging as part of the Onam celebration, a harvest festival celebrated by Keralites. The most auspicious day of the 10-day celebration is today, known as 'Thiruvonam.'
“There’s an Onam swing tradition that one normally leaves to young girls. I was persuaded to get Into the spirit of things this year. Happy Onam!”. The Thiruvananthapuram MP wrote.
In the roughly 30-second video, Mr Tharoor is seen wearing a red kurta and a white mundu (a cloth wrapped around the waist) as he enjoys the swing ritual, also known as Onam Oonjaal. With his entire family, the Congress MP celebrated Onam at his ancestral house in Palakkad. See video here.

While Onam lasts for ten days, the major event takes place over three days, from August 21 to 23. The date is based on the Panchangam, which occurs on the 22nd Nakshatra Thiruvonam in the month Chingam of the Malayalam calendar, which corresponds to August-September in the Gregorian calendar. According to the Malayalam calendar, the first month is Chingam.
The cuisine, which consists of traditional vegetarian dishes from Kerala served on banana leaves, is one of the most important aspects of Onam festivities.
Due to an increase in Covid cases in Kerala, the state government has decided to host virtual Onam festivities.
On the 14th of August, the virtual Onam festival officially began.
