In a major development, Punjab Traffic Police will now issue online challans against traffic rules violators in four cities. The four cities of Punjab where the online challans will be issued with the help of CCTV cameras are Mohali, Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Ludhiana. The online challans will come into effect from January 26, 2025.
The trial of CCTV cameras installed at traffic signals has been completed. Therefore, traffic management in these cities will be monitored by both traffic police and these cameras. Control rooms have been set up in all these cities for the cameras, where traffic police personnel will monitor 24 hours. From here, challans will be prepared for those who violate the rules and will be sent to their homes through post.
Traffic ADGP A.S. Rai shared this update, explaining that the online challan system will contribute significantly to the state’s treasury, boosting government revenue. In Amritsar, around 1,189 CCTV cameras have been installed to support the online challan initiative.
ADGP Rai further emphasized that the online challan system would not only enhance traffic management but also help improve the monitoring of traffic violations. As part of this initiative, it has been made mandatory for two-wheeler riders to wear helmets and four-wheeler drivers to wear seat belts.
