Guwahati: Rajen Gohain, the only representative from Assam in the outgoing Union ministry who is also the longest serving BJP MP of North East region, has been refused party ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

A fourth time MP from Nagao in Central Assam, was not taken into consideration by the party leadership while announcing the names for the constituency last night. Rupak Sharma, a Nagaon MLA has been nominated as the BJP candidate for the seat where the filing of nominations is coming to a close today.

Gohain who is a Member of State for Railways has made his final efforts yesterday, to secure the party ticket after he was vindicated of a sexual harassment case by the Gauhati High Court. Yesterday, the High Court gave its verdict in BJP leader favour.

Earlier, he had publicized that he will not be contesting the election until he gets a clean chit. In his final attempt, Gohain had urged the party to give the candidature to his wife in place of him, but the part paid no heed to his request. Instead, the party made its final decision by announcing the name of Rupak Sharma from Nagaon. Nagaon goes to the polls in the second phase on April 18.
