Former Hockey Captain and MLA Pargat Singh took charge as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) General Secretary (Organisation) on Tuesday in Congress Bhawan in Chandigarh in the presence of Punjab Congress President Navjot Sidhu and Punjab Hockey President Nitin Kohli.
In his speech while congratulating Pargat for the big responsibility, Navjot Sidhu said, “Not just in hockey, but in politics too, the world's one of the top defenders Pargat has always defended his principles and stood firm in his beliefs”.
Sidhu said with his aggressive and Pargat’s defensive style, their Jodi will now lead the Congress to new heights. “I’ve always been a fan of his, I used to miss my classes to watch Pargat’s hockey match”, Sidhu added.
Pargat Singh while taking over the charge thanked Navjot Sidhu, Capt Amarinder and Harish Rawat for the big responsibility. “I will give my best and will always work for the welfare of Punjab. The state is reeling under huge debt; our main objective is to make Punjab self-reliant and bring back the lost glory”.
“The party will create an atmosphere of unity and we’ll work together for the people of Punjab”, he added.
Pargat had always been a close confidant of Navjot Sidhu. At the time of Punjab Congress Crisis, Pargat backed Navjot Sidhu for raising voice and demanding justice in the Sacrilege case. He also criticized his own government for failing to provide jobs to the youth and not fulfilling pre-poll promises.
Meanwhile, the appointment came days after Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had a meeting with Sonia Gandhi in the national capital.

The information of Pargat Singh being appointed as General Secretary PPCC Organization was shared by Navjot Sidhu on Monday through a press release. In a statement yesterday, Sidhu said, "With the approval of interim Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal and Punjab Congress in-charge Harish rawat, I hereby appoint Pargat Singh as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary (organisation) with immediate effect."
However, at the same time, Captain Amarinder Singh has not been able to make changes in the cabinet yet.
