In its initiative to apprehend the accused involved in defrauding the innocent people by duping in the guise of jobs, the Pathankot Police on Saturday have achieved a remarkable feat by unearthing fraudulent job scams.
In the first case, the police arrested a cunning lady travel agent who had been deceiving victims with false promises of jobs and permanent residency in Croatia and the second case involved the exposure and apprehension of the main culprit orchestrating a deceitful scheme within the merchant navy industry.
The arrested accused have been identified as Urmila Jawaliya, a resident of Pathankot, and Arun, resident of Gurdaspur district.
Providing further information to the press, Senior Superintendent of Police Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh disclosed that the probe commenced in response to complaints received by the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of Pathankot Police. The inquiry was spearheaded by Inspector Gurpreet Kaur from EOW, with assistance from SHO Taragarh, Navdeep Sharma and SHO Division No. 1, Inspector Mandeep Salgotra, both of whom played pivotal roles in the operation. He said that the first case revolved around a distressing incident concerning Mr. Kashmir Singh, a resident of village Bhumbli, Gurdaspur. He fell victim to a deception orchestrated by Urmila Jawaliya, who posed as a travel agent. Ms. Jawaliya falsely assured Mr. Singh said that she could secure a job opportunity for his son in Croatia, demanding a sum of Rs 6.5 lakhs for the same. After extracting Rs 5.6 lakhs from Mr. Singh, Urmila Jawaliya handed over fraudulent documents and failed to fulfill her promises. Subsequently, SHO Division No.1, Mandeep Salgotra, set up a trap, leading to the arrest of the lady. A case has been registered against the accused under sections 420, 406 IPC, and 24 of the Immigration Act at Police Station Division No. 1.
In yet another incident, Chandra, a parent residing in a village in Gurdaspur, fell prey to a fake scheme. A Gurdaspur resident Arun had promised him a lucrative position in the merchant navy for his son, Amandeep, but with a catch – they required him to complete an expensive course. Trusting the promises made, Chandra provided the necessary funds and documents, only to discover that it was all a complete falsehood. Adding insult to injury, when the Chandra family sought a refund, the person responsible issued bounced checks, leaving Chandra defrauded of a substantial amount, namely, Rs 5.5 lakh. However, the situation took a turn for the better when SHO Taragarh, Navdeep Sharma, and his team devised a plan, leading to the apprehension of the accused. Consequently, FIR No. 44 dated 27.7.2023 was registered against the accused under sections 420, 467, 468, and 471 of the IPC (PS Taragarh).
