Peru landslides: 10 dead and over 1,800 injured

Moscow: Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra said on Tuesday that the death toll from landslides and flooding in southern Peru has increased to 10 people, while 1,800 people were injured as a result of the disaster. Previous reports had said that six people were killed in landslides in Peru.

"According to the cumulative damage, the emergency situation affected 8,000 people, 1,800 people were injured and 10 individuals died. In addition, such infrastructure facilities as bridges, roads, medical centers and police stations were damaged," the Peruvian presidential administration said on Twitter, citing Vizcarra.

According to the President, the government "is making every effort to address the emergency situation in southern Peru" and is coordinating its actions with regional authorities.

Tacna, Arequipa and Moquegua are among the regions which were most affected by the landslides that came down on Friday. The state of emergency was declared in a number of provinces.
