Another Congress infighting came to the fore after Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary on Monday resigned from the party's chief whip post. Although Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary clarified that he will remain with the grand old party, he confirmed his resignation as Congress Chief Whip. As per the information received, Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary tendered his resignation in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. The Phillaur MLA sent his resignation to CLP leader Partap Singh Bajwa. For the unversed, the Chief Whip is a political leader whose task is to enforce the whipping system, which aims to ensure that legislators who are members of a political party attend and vote on legislation as the party leadership prescribes.
Notably, Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary's resignation comes after he expressed his displeasure over Congress' decision to field former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi from the Jalandhar seat for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The Phillaur MLA had questioned Charanjit Channi’s credentials to contest from any seat in Punjab as he had lost the Assembly elections from Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur segments. While it is said that Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary is close to Pratap Bajwa, the Congress High Command has reportedly finalised Channi as its candidate from the Jalandhar seat.
It is pertinent to mention here that MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary is the son of former Jalandhar MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh. Vikram was reportedly mulling to contest elections from the Jalandhar seat. Karamjit Kaur, wife of the former MP, had unsuccessfully contested the last Jalandhar byelection. During the by-election, Sushil Rinku had won. Sushil Rinku contested the election from AAP party. However, Rinku last month joined the BJP.
