The Kapurthala police have apprehended a Punjab Police Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) and a middleman on charges of accepting a bribe amounting to ₹21 lakh for releasing notorious drug smuggler Joginder Singh in an NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) case.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajpal Singh Sandhu, confirmed the arrest of the ASI and the middleman, along with the registration of a criminal case against another ASI involved in the corruption case.
According to SSP Sandhu, he received a phone call from Jalandhar SSP rural on Monday, informing him about the corruption allegations against two ASIs and a middleman involved in the release of the arrested drug smuggler from a 2022 NDPS case.
Taking swift action, SSP Sandhu assigned a senior police officer to investigate the matter, leading to the registration of a corruption case against the accused.
The arrested individuals have been identified as ASI Paramjit Singh and middleman Onkar Singh. However, ASI Harjit Singh, who is the current SHO of PS Subhanpur, is currently absconding to avoid arrest.
Providing details of the incident, the police stated that Jalandhar police arrested Joginder Singh, a resident of Boot village notorious for drug smuggling, on June 12 in the Subhanpur area. The police seized six kilograms of heroin and drug money amounting to ₹3,000 from his possession. During preliminary interrogation, Joginder Singh confessed that the Kapurthala police accepted a bribe of ₹21 lakh in connection with an NDPS case registered against him in Kapurthala district in 2022. The bribe money was allegedly given to both ASIs by his wife to secure his release.
The police have filed a corruption case against all the accused under sections 7, 22, and 120 B of the law.
