President Ram Nath Kovind has suspended the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, Professor Yogesh, Tyagi with immediate effect and has ordered an enquiry into the allegations of dereliction of duties against him.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, the vice-chancellor of DU has been suspended for failing to discharge the duties and responsibilities he was designated with while he was in a position to make decisions.
"The President of India in his capacity as Visitor of the University, on consideration of facts and material available on record, has ordered an inquiry into the allegations of dereliction of duties and lack of commitment and devotion to duty against him," a government statement said.
An official statement regarding the matter has been put out by the Ministry of Education, describing the reasons behind the suspension of Professor Yogesh Tyagi.
The Education Ministry in an official statement regarding the suspension of the vice-chancellor of Delhi University has asserted that all the decisions taken by the professor during his leave of absence will be treated as null and void.
“Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi placed under suspension on President’s order. Orders issued by now suspended DU VC Yogesh Tyagi during his period of absence on medical grounds will be treated as null and void,” the statement read.
The Education Ministry further said that Professor P C Joshi, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, will be functioning as the VC after Yogesh Taygi's suspension so that the university can function smoothly and there's no lapse in the administration.
Many key positions were left vacant during Tayagi's tenure such as:-
- Pro VC
- Registrar
- Finance officer
- Controller examination
- Librarian
- Dean of colleges
- director south campus
- Principals in colleges
- Constitution of governing bodies
Despite repeated messages and warnings from the ministries to fill the post, nobody was appointed for the vacant posts. Education minister and secretary higher education, repeatedly, had meetings with the VC, yet no progress was made.

Prof Tyagi has been on medical leave as he was admitted in AIIMS, New Delhi from July 2020 for emergency surgery. He has neither sought a leave nor informed the education council about his medical condition and the intended leave.
