Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II has died, Buckingham Palace said Friday. He was 99. He has spent seven decades supporting his wife in a role that both defined and constricted his life.
He was recently hospitalised and underwent a successful heart procedure, died on Friday, Buckingham Palace announced.
"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," it said in a statement.
"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
Philip, who is also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, married Elizabeth in 1947 was Britain’s longest-serving consort during a turbulent reign in which the thousand-year-old monarchy was forced to reinvent itself for the 21st century. He retired from public duties in 2017 after carrying out more than 20,000 of them.
Prince Philip was a member of the Greek royal family and was born on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921. He was a sports enthusiast. He had four children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
His parents were Princess Alice of Battenberg, a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, and Prince Andrew of Greece.
